Ask anyone who lives in South Georgian Bay, and they’ll likely tell you that summer doesn’t end on Labour Day. In many ways, September is when the season gets even better. The water is still warm, patios are still open and the trails and beaches have a little more room to breathe. It’s the unofficial locals’ summer — and one of the best times to experience life around the Bay.
The Month Locals Wait For
July and August bring an energy to Collingwood and the surrounding communities that is hard not to love. But once the long weekend passes, the pace begins to settle and the area takes on a different kind of charm.
There is still plenty of summer left, only now it feels a little easier to enjoy. Parking spots are less elusive, favourite patios are easier to get into and the trails feel quieter. For locals, it’s a chance to return to the places we may have avoided during the busiest weeks, and remember how special it is to have all of this in our own backyard.
Summer Isn’t Over Yet
September often delivers some of the loveliest days of the season. The afternoons can still be warm enough for a swim, paddle or boat ride, and Georgian Bay has had all summer to warm up.
It’s also a beautiful time to squeeze in another round of golf, take dinner outside or walk along the waterfront. The evenings may arrive a little earlier, but there’s something lovely about bringing a sweater and staying out as the air cools.
The Best of Both Seasons
As the humidity lifts and the mornings grow cooler, September is also one of the best months to explore the trails around South Georgian Bay. The landscape is still lush from summer, but the first hints of red and gold begin to appear along the escarpment.
Local farm stands and farmers’ markets are overflowing with late-summer produce, while apples and other fall favourites begin to make their return. You can pick up fresh tomatoes alongside the season’s first apples, spend the afternoon near the water and end the day wrapped in a sweater.
The local calendar remains lively, too. Events like the Collingwood Art Crawl and Shipyard Social bring art, music and community into the streets, offering plenty of reasons to get out and enjoy the town after the peak summer rush.
A Glimpse of Local Life
Visitors often discover South Georgian Bay during the height of summer or in the middle of ski season. September offers a different — and perhaps more honest — glimpse of what it feels like to live here.
It’s quieter, but never dull. There is room to slow down, but still so much to do. That balance is one of the things I love most about calling this area home.
So, if you’re not quite ready to say goodbye to summer, don’t. September may be its best chapter yet.
