As someone who loves a good night out with friends and family, I’ve had the pleasure of exploring some fantastic spots during my time as a realtor in this lively community. Plus, I know how important it is to find the perfect place for those special occasions. So, I’ve put together a foodie’s guide of my top 10 favourite restaurants in South Georgian Bay.
Whether you’re celebrating a birthday, anniversary, or just treating yourself, these spots are a must visit.
Heart’s Tavern
One of my all-time favourites, Heart’s Tavern is a local gem in Kimberley, adding a vibrant touch to the otherwise quiet ski town. It’s known for its fresh and quality meals made with local produce and meat. But Heart’s offers more than just exceptional dining; it also boasts a charming stone French cellar in the back that can be booked for a truly unique experience. For those seeking a more laid-back atmosphere, the bar seating is perfect, allowing you to enjoy your meal casually. Don’t miss out on their half-price wine night every Monday—a popular choice among patrons, so be sure to book ahead to secure your spot!
Bruce Wine Bar
If you find yourself in Thornbury, you’ve got to check out Bruce Wine Bar. This place focuses on sustainability and global flavours, sourcing their ingredients responsibly and cooking them up in the most delicious ways. A Feast On certified spot, their Neapolitan wood-fired pizzas, fresh salads, and tasty entrees are top-notch, whether you’re dining in or grabbing takeout. Don’t miss out on their Bodega & Bottle Shop downstairs, where you can pick up some house-prepared foods, handpicked bottles from their sommelier-curated shop, or even some freshly baked goodies.
The Pine
If you’re on the lookout for a culinary gem, look no further than The Pine, a beloved hotspot in Collingwood that’s making its way to Creemore. Ranked among Canada’s top 100 restaurants, this cozy spot offers a 17-course tasting menu with wine pairings, showcasing the best of local ingredients. If you’re looking for an ultimate night out or a treat for a very special occasion, you have to add this restaurant to your list.
Mockingbird
And then there’s Mockingbird, the newest culinary hotspot in town brought to you by the dynamic duo behind The Pine. Inspired by Chef Jeremy’s globetrotting culinary adventures, Mockingbird offers a fresh take on authentic Chinese cuisine. With only 12 seats available, it’s an intimate affair, featuring a set menu of eight shared plates per person.
Gio & Fran’s
If you find yourself towards Meaford, you absolutely must experience Gio & Fran’s Italian Eatery, a charming family-run restaurant that embodies the essence of authentic Italian dining. Tucked away in an intimate setting, Gio & Fran’s invites guests to experience a taste of Italy with its diverse selection of home-style cuisine. From delightful homemade focaccia to decadent desserts, each dish is lovingly prepared to perfection. Patrons can unwind with an espresso or sip on refreshing beverages while basking in the genuine hospitality that Gio & Fran’s is renowned for.
The Gate
As someone who’s been eager to try The Gate, I recently had the opportunity to experience a cooking class there, and it exceeded all expectations. Led by renowned chef Jonathan Gushue, known for his tenure at Langdon Hall and Fogo Island Inn, and Jennifer Bélanger, previously the General Manager of Stratford’s Bruce Hotel and Mark McEwan’s One Restaurant, The Gate brings culinary magic to Grey County. With Chef Phillippe de Montburn and Sommelier Mathilde Coquin rounding out the team, the restaurant promises an unforgettable dining experience, marrying exquisite cuisine with impeccable service. I’m already looking forward to going back, knowing that no matter how hard I try, their creations will always surpass my own.
Tremont Cafe
In the heart of historic downtown Collingwood, you’ll find Tremont Cafe, where fine dining meets warm hospitality. With a diverse menu, a carefully curated wine list, and an extensive cocktail program, it’s a haven for those who appreciate authentic flavours and a proper drink. What I love most about the Tremont is that guests are welcomed with open arms and treated like family, creating an atmosphere where everyone feels appreciated.
DOWN HOME by Sumac + Salt
Down Home is a cozy farmhouse restaurant nestled in the heart of Grey Highlands, brought to you by the talented team behind Sumac & Salt. They’re all about celebrating the best of what Grey, Bruce, and Simcoe County have to offer through a multi-course seasonal tasting menu. With a focus on using ingredients sourced from local farmers and producers, they’re not just serving up delicious dishes but also sharing the stories behind each ingredient.
Low Down Bar
I can’t forget to mention Low Down Bar. It’s located on Creative Simcoe Street in Collingwood, and it’s one of my top spots to catch up with friends over drinks or groove to live music on Thursday nights. And guess what? They’ve got some exciting news—they’re gearing up to launch a new grab-and-go restaurant next door! I’m looking forward to sampling their café-style sandwiches, salads, snacks, and more.
Barcelos Restaurant & Grill
Nestled in Wasaga Beach, Barcelos brings a slice of Portugal to your plate with its genuine cuisine and inviting ambiance. Treat yourself to classic dishes such as peri-peri chicken, mouthwatering seafood delights, and flavourful grilled meats. Don’t miss out on their fantastic patio, which is one of the highlights of the summer season in the region!
From fine dining establishments to cozy taverns, South Georgian Bay offers something for every palate and occasion. But why wait for something special? Treat yourself to a culinary adventure and discover the diverse flavours that await in this picturesque region.
