This July marked a major milestone for me—20 years in real estate. After more than a decade navigating Toronto’s fast-paced market and nearly ten years helping clients discover the charm of South Georgian Bay, I’m proud of the reputation I’ve built—one grounded in trust, integrity, and results.
In honour of this anniversary, I thought it would be fun to share a more personal side of my journey. Keep reading for a lighthearted Q&A, where I answer questions about everything from my morning routine to the lessons I’ve learned along the way.
What first drew you to Collingwood—and what made you decide to stay?
In 2015, my ex-husband and his family rented a place in the area for the summer. My kids were spending time here, and I rented a spot nearby to be close. I’d already been introduced to the region years earlier through friends in Beaver Valley and had always loved the lifestyle. When the idea of relocating came up, I spoke with my Toronto broker and financial advisor—both familiar with the area—and they agreed it could be the right time. The market felt poised for growth, and I was ready for a change. We made the move in 2016, and it’s been home ever since.
How do you typically start your mornings in South Georgian Bay?
Always with meditation and breathwork—Insight Timer is my go-to app. After that, I typically read the news and then I like to get outside for a hike, bike ride, or a walk with my dog. In the winter, it might be snowshoeing or cross-country skiing. I try to start the day with movement and nature whenever I can. I also like to hit the gym (Active Life).
What’s your idea of a perfect day off?
Coffee first—always! Then a long hike with friends, maybe a few hours at Scandinave Spa, and ideally, dinner with my kids and partner Denis at one of the amazing local restaurants. Time together and time outdoors—that’s the sweet spot.
Do you have a favourite local hidden gem?
There are so many, but I always recommend Georgian Bay Surf Club or Gibson & Co. in Collingwood for coffee, delicious local food, drinks and good vibes. Hearts in Kimberly is another favourite of mine. For trails, I love the ones around Pretty River and also the ski hills around Blue. And of course, the shops and cafés sprinkled throughout Thornbury and Collingwood are hard to beat.
What do you love most about working in real estate?
Introducing people to this area. I work with a lot of out-of-town buyers who are looking for a lifestyle change, and I love being part of that journey. I think it helps that I’ve done it myself and can share my personal experiences with them. I especially love working with first-time buyers—they’re excited, eager to learn, and incredibly appreciative.
What’s one piece of advice you always give to clients?
For sellers: Don’t listen to your neighbours—listen to your agent. Market value isn’t based on what someone down the street thinks your house is worth.
For buyers: Don’t talk yourself into a home. If it doesn’t feel right, wait. You’ll know when you find the one.
How do clients describe working with you?
I’ll let my reviews speak for themselves! One of my favourites said:
“Janet didn’t just sell our house—she made us feel confident every step of the way. Highly recommend her if you want someone who truly knows the local scene and loves South Georgian Bay as much as we do.”
Another described me as “authentic, patient, and incredibly knowledgeable,” especially during a tricky market. That kind of feedback means the world to me.
What’s your dream vacation destination?
Right now I’m really drawn to the Greek Islands and Portugal—and I’d love to do a European city tour through Prague, Budapest, and Vienna. I haven’t been to any of them yet, but they’re at the top of my list.
Any home trends you love—or hope never come back?
Shag carpets can stay in the past, thank you! But I’ve got an incredible kind-of shag rug in my living room that I love! As does my dog Jessie!
I’m currently loving ranch-style bungalows—large footprint, all on one level. They’re timeless and incredibly livable.
What’s something people would be surprised to learn about you?
I used to ride a motorcycle! I haven’t driven one in a really long time, but yes—I was that girl.
How does it feel to be celebrating 20 years in real estate?
Honestly, it’s a bit surreal. I had a whole career before this, and these 20 years have flown by. The last nine here in Collingwood have been especially rewarding. Real estate continues to challenge me, teach me, and keep me on my toes. Even with all the changes—from the market to technology—I still love what I do. I’m proud of the path I’ve taken and looking forward to what the future holds.
