The snow is officially coming down in South Georgian Bay, blanketing everything in a layer of fresh powder. December is in full swing, and there’s a buzz in the air that only this time of year can bring. There’s something so magical about the twinkling lights, the cozy gatherings, and the sense of community that shines brightest during this season.
Whether you’re out playing in the snow or enjoying the view from a warm window, there’s something special about living here during the holidays. And there’s no shortage of ways to celebrate! From festive events and cozy dining to breathtaking outdoor adventures, here are some of my favourite ways to embrace the season in Collingwood and the Blue Mountains.
Holiday Magic at Blue Mountain Village
Blue Mountain Village transforms into a winter wonderland during the holiday season. This year’s Holiday Magic runs until January 5, 2025, and features a stunning one-kilometer stroll through the Village adorned with dazzling light displays and festive decorations.
Each weekend brings themed entertainment and live music, so there’s always something new to experience. For those looking for a festive treat, the Snowdome Cocktail Garden is a cozy spot to warm up with a drink while soaking in the sights.
Insider Tip: Take the stroll in the evening when the lights are at their brightest, and don’t forget your camera—the photo opportunities are endless!
Collingwood Downtown Santa Claus Parade
Although this year’s Santa Claus Parade has already passed, it was an event to remember. The floats, music, and the grand lighting of Collingwood’s Christmas tree marked the official start of the holiday season. If you missed it, mark your calendar for next November—it’s a wonderful way to kick off the festivities and connect with the community.
Caribbean Winterland Festival
From December 6 to 8, Blue Mountain Village heats up with a splash of Caribbean culture! The Caribbean Winterland Festival, hosted in partnership with the Toronto Caribbean Carnival, is a unique celebration featuring parang, soca, tassa, and steelpan performances. It’s the perfect way to infuse some warmth and rhythm into your winter.
Insider Tip: Arrive early to secure a good spot near the stage, and don’t miss the delicious food offerings inspired by Caribbean cuisine.
Holiday Break at Blue Mountain
If you’re looking for activities to keep the whole family entertained, the Holiday Break at Blue Mountain from December 23 to January 5 is ideal. Enjoy live music, groove dancing, and the Holiday Magic Light Trail, which promises a magical journey through the heart of the Village. And of course, don’t forget to hit the hill! Blue Mountain’s ski slopes are in top form this time of year, offering runs for every skill level, from beginners to seasoned pros.
Scenic Caves Nordic Centre
For those who love outdoor adventures, the Scenic Caves Nordic Centre is the place to be. Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing trails wind through snow-covered forests, offering breathtaking views of the region. If you’re looking for something extra special, try the candlelit snowshoe hikes—they’re truly magical.
Insider Tip: Pack a thermos of hot chocolate for the hike. It’s a family tradition of ours, and it makes the experience even better.
Woodview Mountaintop Skating
Trade your usual skating spot for an unforgettable experience at Woodview Mountaintop Skating. Located at the top of Blue Mountain, this 1.1-kilometer loop offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Niagara Escarpment and Georgian Bay. Skating amidst forested trails, whether under the sunshine or a canopy of stars, is truly one-of-a-kind.
Insider Tip: Dress warmly—the mountaintop can be cooler than the village below. Skate rentals are available on-site, and it’s a good idea to check weather conditions before heading up.
Relax with a Cozy Indoor Escape
If the snowstorm has you craving a day indoors, there are plenty of cozy options to enjoy in South Georgian Bay. Spend an afternoon curled up with a good book at a local café, or treat yourself to a spa day at one of the area’s top wellness retreats. The Scandinave Spa Blue Mountain is a favourite for its outdoor hot baths surrounded by snowy trees, as well as its relaxing indoor lounges.
Prefer something more creative? Visit the Blue Mountain Foundation for the Arts in downtown Collingwood to explore local art exhibits or pick up a unique piece to gift this holiday season.
Insider Tip: Sometimes, the best way to enjoy a snowy day is to slow down and indulge in a little self-care. A warm drink, a cozy spot, and a quiet moment can be just as magical as a day outdoors.
Celebrate the Magic of the Season
The holidays are a time to slow down, connect with loved ones, and soak in the beauty of the season. South Georgian Bay offers endless opportunities to do just that, and these events are only the beginning. Whether you’re enjoying the light displays, dancing to Caribbean rhythms, or gliding across a skating rink, there’s something here for everyone.
If you’ve been thinking about making this incredible area your home, there’s no better time than now. I’d love to help you find the perfect place to enjoy all the magic South Georgian Bay has to offer—this holiday season and beyond.
Wishing you and your family a joyful and festive December!
